The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Survival Horror and Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct personas, each with unique anxieties and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
