He smiles as he points the camera on his person and his companion militiamen, their paramilitary insignia clearly shown: "The victims are all going to perish in this manner."

These individuals are rejoicing over a massacre that relief organizations believe killed more than thousands of people in the African city of al-Fashir during October.

An Urban Center Cut Off from the Outside

Following their control of the city under blockade for almost 24 months, from late summer the paramilitary force advanced to consolidate its dominance and prevent access for the remaining inhabitants.

Orbital photography show that troops started to build a immense berm - a raised sand barrier - encircling the boundaries of al-Fashir, sealing off roads and preventing relief supplies.

As the siege worsened, seventy-eight people were murdered in an militia attack on a place of worship on September 19th, while the United Nations reported dozens additional were killed in unmanned aircraft and artillery attacks on a refugee settlement in October.

At dawn on 26 October the RSF conquered the remaining military strongholds and took control of the central base in the city, the main facility of the Army Division, as the army retreated.
