US air traffic controllers are more and more looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid during the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to keep doing their duties without pay.

But a number have been absent, causing terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and additional factors.

Over 3,000 American flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," he said in an interview on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I work for Uber, am I able to find another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy added that on Saturday 22 alerts at airports said travel would be held up due to a lack of workers - one of the highest after the closure started.

The American federal closure reached its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in history.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of planes in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I need my controllers focused on the flight paths, not on the finances at home," Duffy said.

On that day, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the world, as well as additional travel stretching upward to the metropolis of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert was issued at 8:45 AM in the morning on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airport in the US, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The FAA advised travelers in California to check with carriers about updated departure times.

The situation precedes Game 3 of the World Series, which is scheduled in LA on Monday evening, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving break, among the peak periods to travel by air in the United States.

Strain on American aviation contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including pilot training.

It led several air traffic controllers to remain absent on the same day on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, the former president, who at the period was in his initial presidency as leader, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, bringing an end to the federal closure after thirty-five days.
